Updating from 2.6 to 2.7

So after making a backup of my site I moved the theme files for fitpro to a different directory and then put the 2.7 version in place in “/wp-content/themes”. Then upon going back to the wordpress backend my site gets a 500 error. When i move he 2.7 files away and put the 2.6 files back in place the site works again. …. is this not how i should update the theme ? Suggestions … ? Was hoping to update today my theme today so that i could install all plugin updates such as woocommerce and other associated updates as I havent touched this site since feburary of this year and lots of updates are due.

should it be of use i have included a status report from my woocommerce tools …

Did you make any changes in themefiles?
If no then you can delete the current version and install the newest version through wp-dashboard .
