Why is my site loading so slow?

The site has always loaded slow. The sample site does not load this slow and has even more content on it than ours.

What could be the issue?

It scores an 88 on Google Page insights yet loads slower than pages with lower scores.

After installing the plugin I noticed a slow down. I think it has to do with available ram usage.
The site has lots of pieces that loads during each request.

Are you using one of the caching plugins like WP Super Cache? That should help speed up things if you are not using the same already. Using caching plugin avoids backend processing/ RAM usage for every user request.
