I’ve placed the default portfolio page as a subpage like this: http://www.site.com/page/portfolio.

In the theme options I’ve specified that this page is the default portfolio page.

But the portfolio items ignore the /page/ level and just link to http://www.site.com/portfolio/portfolio-item instead of http://www.site.com/page/portfolio/portfolio-item.
And when I click the overview icon in the portfolio loop-nav, it takes me back to http://www.site.com/portfolio instead of http://www.site.com/page/portfolio.

So it seems the theme option setting ‘Specify default portfolio page’ doesn’t handle subpages. Looks like a bug?

Actually we do not use the theme setting for default portfolio page anymore. Instead we automatically point to the archive page created for the respective custom post type by the user using one of the page template for that custom post type (makes life much easier for the user since this theme has so many custom post types and it is really cumbersome to set every archive page). We automatically detect the archive page by checking the page template name in the page and link to it. I am guessing you probably have two pages presently which are using Portfolio template and that is the reason for this issue. Is this right? If you delete one, the items should get pointed to the other one irrespective of whether it has parent or not.

    I see.

I only have one page using the portfolio template. There was another one using the ‘filterable portfolio’ which I trashed and then deleted permanently.

But portfolio items are still opening at /portfolio/item instead of /page/portfolio/item.
In WordPress each portfolio item still has this incorrect URL, but even when I create new portfolio items, they do not get the /page/ added to the URL. I tried visiting permalinks page with no effect.

Looks like I misunderstood the problem. The portfolio items will never have /page/ added to their URL since they are custom post types independent of the pages which are a post type of their own. Only way to link them is through breadcrumbs or by telling WordPress to create an archive page for the custom post type. We decided not to go for archives since lots of our customers wanted the flexibility of a page template and you can edit the page and alter its contents.

Ok thanks – since I only have one portfolio, I will just hardcode the index link to point to my /page/.

That was my main problem – linking back from a portfolio item to the portfolio index page via the index icon in loop-nav.
