Permalinks for Hierarchy Pages

How do I remove the home page slug as part of the hierarchy? For example:

http://example.com/home-page-slug/page-slug

to this…

http://example.com/page-slug

The other reason for doing this (besides being cosmetic) is that some of the template pages don’t seem to work unless they are part of a hierarchy (pricing)
