Featured Image Resize on Portfolio Item

I want to keep the featured image on my portfolio but want to ideally remove (if not reduce in size) the actual image on the post, so featured image thumb appears on portfolio page but is not visible (or reduced in size) when you click thru to the specific portfolio item. The problem i’m having is the images I’ve used for the portfolio thumbs are pretty small and when scaled up as the featured image on the specific post the look dreadful. Any ideas? Thanks
